From Chocolate Covered Protein Bars, to Protein Spiked Popcorn, to Crispy Protein Bars, Square Organics has the vegan protein niche. I think that anyone who would spend their honeymoon demoing a new line of healthy products has some serious dedication. But do their protein packed snacks actually taste.. well.. not like cardboard? Find out here……
Sarah and Andrew are the founders of Square Organics. Focused on whole ingredients, and a passion to maintain a healthy lifestyle Chocolate Covered Protein Bars were born (followed recently by the release of their Crispy Bars and Protein Spiked Popcorn.). Although this brand would never have come to being without Sarah taking control of her health and overcoming her asthma by eliminating gluten, soy, and a handful of other inflammatory foods.
Today I will be covering a few of the Chocolate Covered flavors, and their new lines of Crispy Protein Bars and Protein Popcorn.
Chocolate Covered Protein Bars:
Chocolate Coated Cookie Dough:
One of Square’s newer flavors, I was looking forward to trying it. The texture was soft (like actual cookie dough), with a bit of bite from the chocolate coating and cacao nibs spread throughout the batter. The flavor was in comparison to a cashew chocolate chip cookie. Delicious!
Chocolate Coated Crunch:
Unlike the rest of the protein bars, this is the only chocolate coated with a crunch. Prepare for a double chocolate punch. The essence of true chocolate flavor comes through. I really enjoyed the different flavors of chocolate I could taste between the chocolate coating and the chocolate crunch. Slightly sweet, but not without that tang of bitterness from the cacao beans. I found the “crunch” to be not so much crunchy as more of a packed powdery. I wish there was more definition in the crunch.
Chocolate Coated Cherry Coconut:
This was a very refreshing bar to have. The taste of tart cherries and sweet coconut cut right through the chocolate flavor. It felt lighter than the previous bars I tried, and more spring-ish and less hearty. The texture was a bit more firm than the Cookie Dough, and had more of a texture profile because of the little flecks of coconut and cherries. Excellent morning pick-me-up.
Chocolate Coated Mint:
I had heard so much about this particular bar that I needed to try it out! I am a huge chocolate mint fan, so I was hopelessly in love at first bite. The time your teeth sink into the dark chocolate you are hit with a cool wave from the peppermint oil (no artificial flavors here). Texture was silky, and smooth with a little crunch from the brown rice nibs. Incidentally.. enjoyable!
Crispy Protein Bars:
Compared to their other line of protein bars, this (as well as the following) are thicker and crispy. Filled with puffed grains and rice crisps there is no lack of texture here. I enjoyed the slight hint of vanilla I got, but honestly, was not my favorite. I found an overwhelming taste of toasted-ness. Almost to the point of a slight bitter aftertaste. Not my cup of tea. But, this (out of all the other crispy bars), was my father’s favorite.
Chocolate Sea Salt:
The texture was almost identical to the Vanilla Cashew, but I did sense a bit more of a soft texture. Not to say it was not crispy, but it was not over the top crispy (which I enjoyed). Just because it does not have a chocolate coating, does not mean they skimped on the chocolate flavor. It was slightly chocolate-y, but not chocolate chocolate-y. So if you prefer a lighter hint of chocolate, this bar is for you. I would have liked a bit more, but I am being picky. 😉
Because of my experience with the Vanilla Cashew I was concerned that this bar would give that same over toasted flavor. I was wrong.. sort of. It was borderline, but not over the line. It gave a nice toasted aspect without being terribly overwhelming. And flavor wise, come on guys, toasted coconut? Where could you go wrong?
This whole concept of protein popcorn was new to me. And I was a skeptic. I imagined a giant vat of popped popcorn being coated in a clear coating and dumping bags of plain chalky protein powder. Not very appetizing. I was surprising wrong. Almost a kettle corn texture with a sweet salty coating in every crevice. I loved that I was proven wrong (and that I could eat the whole bag). Not overly salty, but a perfect balance.
This one was in my top two of favorites. Literally a dessert popcorn. Sweet coating over a little popped kernel. This really was like kettle corn. The sweetness did not hit immediately, but came a few seconds later. It was a pleasant rush over my tongue, and not sickeningly sweet. Texture wise, it was identical with the Sea Salt.
I’m glad they put “mild” after spicy because that is how I found it. The first bite I didn’t get any spice, but then it slowly creeped up on my tongue enough to be noticed. I love spicy, overly spicy. So I was a bit disappointed, but understandably so. It was a bit to much to ask to have an inferno level hot. 😉 So don’t be frightened by the spicy level. It is subtle and quite enjoyable.
Wow! What a well rounded group of vegan protein packed snacks! I had had my eye on Square Organics for a little while, and was excited when I finally got the opportunity to try them. It was a roller coated of experiences. Some ups and some downs. But as a whole I give them a round of applause for their innovations, and flavor profiles. I encourage you to check out their website for more flavors and information. Or skip on over to Amazon for reviews and more!
